The story of the disappearance of Madeleine McCann took another twist in a UK court today as Kate McCann told of how a woman claiming to be her missing daughter turned up at her house unannounced.
In a recording of the encounter played to a court an emotional Mrs McCann pleads with Julia Wandelt and her supporter Karen Spragg to leave her driveway telling them: 'You are causing us a lot of distress. Stop it.'
When her husband Gerry McCann returns home moments later he can be heard telling Wandelt: 'You need help - you are not Madeleine. Please do not hassle us. We are not having a discussion.' Wandelt, 24, later posted a letter through the couple's door in which she called Mrs McCann 'mummy'. It was signed 'Madeleine', jurors were told.
The court heard Wandelt and Spratt also discussed rummaging through the McCanns' rubbish or following them to a restaurant to steal cutlery in an attempt to find something they could take a DNA sample from. Wandelt, from Poland, and Spragg, 61, of Cardiff, are on trial accused of stalking the McCanns, causing them 'serious alarm or distress', between June 1, 2022, and February 21, 2025.
Instant Dismissal Raises uncomfortable questions.
Kate and Gerry McCann were adamant that Wendelt wasn’t their daughter from the moment the Polish woman first contacted them, raising disturbing questions among many following the case: How could they be so sure without even meeting her?
Over the years, the McCanns have insisted they had nothing to do with Madeleine’s disappearance. Their version of events — that a stranger entered their holiday apartment and kidnapped their daughter — remains the official narrative. Yet in 18 years, no DNA, fingerprints, CCTV, witnesses, or physical evidence of any kind has ever surfaced to back it up.
Many who have been following the case closely have raise some awkward questions for the McCanns who have repeatedly denied having any involvement in their daughter’s disappearance.
Their version of events has become the prevailing narrative. That an unknown man entered their holiday apartment and kidnaped Madeleine, without leaving a single piece of evidence for the crime. No fingerprints, DNA, noise, signs of a struggle, eye witness accounts, or even cctv has ever been found.
Strange Behaviour and Public Suspicion.
Since that fateful day the McCanns have concentrated on a search for their missing daughter, a search that has failed to find a single clue in 18 years. Gerry and Kate McCann have been heavily criticised for their strange and often bizarre behaviour throughout. From the first press conference only hours after their daughter disappeared through the hundreds of hours of tv interviews where not a single tear was ever shed, to accusations that money donated to the search fund has secretly been spent suing journalists who have asked too many awkward questions.
Unasked questions and unintended consequences.
This latest incident again brings some more unwanted questions and unintended consequences. How exactly does Kate McCann know that Wandelt wasn’t her daughter? Many parents suggest that if Kate McCann were really searching for her daughter, she would investigate any claim, however unlikely. Not dismiss them out of hand.
In reality a parent with a missing child would be ‘clutching at straws’, desperate for any lead, however small, however unlikely, if it meant getting their child back, yet the McCanns appear to know that none of the reports, claims, and suspects are worth investigating. Many point to this certainty, together with the McCanns cold and robotic-like behaviour as a huge sign of guilt.
The only logical explanation for this certainty must surely be the McCanns knowing exactly what happened to their daughter. But, very cleverly, this court case is not about them, or what they know. The case, about a possible answer to the case has skilfully been reframed into another ‘attack’ on the McCanns. A woman who suggests that she may be their long lost daughter labelled a stalker.
Even more bizarrely Wandelt is a direct result of a McCann appeal. According to reports at the time, the McCanns dismissed outright any possibility that the girl could actually be their missing daughter. The one that they’ve been supposedly searching for and hadn’t seen for some 15 years.
The first emotion is always anger with the McCanns.
When journalists approached the McCanns with the potentially wonderful news that their daughter may well have been found they were ‘instantly dismissive’ of the claim, and were reportedly very aggressive. Almost as if they knew that this girl couldn’t possibly be their daughter, because they knew she was dead.
Although it has since been proven that Wendelt is not Madeliene the only way that the McCanns could say so, with 100% conviction is if they knew what had really happened to their daughter.
